GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Texas State Auditor’s Office—a legislative agency that serves as the independent auditor for Texas state government—is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Report Editor to support the development of clear, accurate, and impactful communications. This position plays a key role in editing audit reports and other agency publications, ensuring they meet high standards of quality, clarity, and professionalism for audiences that include the Texas Legislature, state agencies, and the general public.
The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and editor who can translate complex and technical content into clear, accessible language. This role involves collaborating with staff across the agency, supporting internal training on writing best practices, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Edits complex technical documents—including audit reports, guides, and brochures—for content, clarity, grammar, and style.
  • Translates professional jargon and complex language into clear, audience-appropriate content.
  • Collaborates with project managers, audit managers, communications staff, graphic designers, and executive leadership to tailor content to target audiences and align messaging with communication goals.
  • Develops and refines content by drafting, structuring, editing, and proofreading agency documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, and a professional tone for publication.
  • Reviews final drafts to ensure clarity, professionalism, and readiness for publication and coordinates the preparation and timely distribution of audit reports to the Texas Legislature, state agencies, and the public, in accordance with agency policies.
  • Develops and delivers internal training on effective writing and communication strategies, including techniques for organizing and presenting information (including graphics) clearly and professionally.
  • Assists staff with preparing content for presentations.
  • Responds to inquiries from agency staff, providing guidance and clarification as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business, English, or a related field. Three years of experience in technical writing, journalism, communications, preparation of information releases and reports, or other news materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong knowledge of writing, editing, and content design principles, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex information clearly and professionally.
  • Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and plain language principles to ensure clarity and accessibility for diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and organizational levels.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
  • Knowledge of relevant software tools, including Adobe Acrobat Professional, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
